Last night I was watching Liverpool vs Roma at Feneway Park and in particular Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.
During the start of the summer we were been heavily linked with hi, but as we all know we have possibly one of the worst sporting directors at this point in time. Although Benatia only played the first have i came away from his performance extremely impressed. He's great in possession, interceptions are second to none and overall is an extremely well rounded center back in his prime.
Following our what is lets be honest a desperate signing of Mathieu from Valencia, i have been left wondering yet again, what the hell is going on? We've just over payed for a 31 year old center back that isn't in the French National Team. I have seen Mathieu play quite a few times at Valencia and to be fair he is a solid center back. However this isnt that long term answer for what has been our achilles heal over the past 2 seasons. If the people in the board actually started to do there jobs properly, and really look and scout these players they should be able to see the genuine long term quality Benatia would bring to the club. If the board is willing to pay upwards to 20 Million Euros for Mathieu, in my opinion they should be willing to pay upwards of 40 Million Euros for Benatia. If our board members had anywhere near the ambition as the ones over in Madrid we would have already signed Benatia and our defense would not be yet again our biggest worry for the upcoming season
